1st Ever U.N Mandela Prize To Be Awarded To Namibian Doctor and Former Portuguese President


     

The first-ever United Nations Nelson Mandela Rolihlahla Prize for outstanding contribution to the service of humanity will be awarded to Helena Ndume and Jorge Fernando Branco Sampaio at UN Headquarters in New York today Friday July 24, 2015.

Helena Ndume is an ophthalmologist whose life’s work has been dedicated to the treatment of
blindness and eye-related illnesses, both in Namibia and throughout the developing world.

Jorge Fernando Branco Sampaio was the 18th President of Portugal and receives the prize for his longstanding commitment to freedom, human rights, democracy and peace.
