Transition to Digital Broadcasting Has Begun in Cameroon

The technological evolution which is digital terrestrial television (DTT), is now a reality in Cameroon.
In the cities of yaounde and douala, and even their environs, viewers who own DIGITAL flat screen tvs, can now watch 12 channels for free, by simply installing a standalone antenna (like the antenna illustrated in the image above, on top of the building). The image quality of the DTT signals, is visibly superior to signals on cable tv, and will not suffer interference even during a rainstorm. These channels are:
(Eight Local Channels)
Crtv
Canal 2
Stv
Equinoxe
Vision 4
LTM
DBS
Camnews

(Four international channels)
BBC
TV5
France24
Tiji

However, not ALL flat screen tvs are DIGITAL. If your flat screen isn't, then it will (like analogue television sets), require a set up box or decoder.
For this first phase of the exercise, 1000 decoders are being tested in selected households in Yaounde and Douala. At the appropriate time, decoders will be made available to the public, at affordable prices, according to a press release by the Minister of Communication.

The technical dispostions in place for now, only allow viewers in the cities of douala and yaounde to receive the free to air bouquet of 12 channels. Nonetheless, the Director of Communication Engineering at the Ministry of Communication, Didier Kaba Aliguen, affirms that at least 80% of the country will be covered progressively within two years, to complete the transition, or Digital Broadcast Switchover.
The cities of Bamenda and Garoua, are next in line to receive the digital tv signals, within the next three months.
