But the reds performance against Real Madrid tuesday night at the mythic Santiago Bernabeu came in as a shock to most football lovers. In a game which many had predicted to be a vultures banquet for defending champions Real Madrid, Liverpool’s manager Brendan Rodgers preferred to field in a weakened squad preserving star players like Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and the very controversial Mario Balotelli for Saturday’s clash against Chelsea. Playing against football stars such as Chritiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema, Liverpool’ defence lead by an impressive Alberto Moreno and a no nonsense Kolo Toure kept abay attacks from the Spanish giants. Constant attempts from the Los Meringues lead to a 27th minute goal by French striker Karim Benzema. Real Madrid then multiplied attempts which proved futile. At half time, Carlo Ancelotti’ boys had a 61percent ball possession, shooting at Liverpool’s goal 13times with 6 of their attempts hitting the target.
Second half substitutions saw the emblematic Steven Gerrard, Phillipe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling come in for Liverpool while Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale introduced himself to the game. A few opportunities created in the second half left the results unchanged as both teams separated in a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid. A result that gets the Spanish giants their ticket for the next round of the competition. Liverpool’s home fixture against Real Madrid had seen the English team receive a 3-0 lashing in their own backyard at Anfield. The Reds find themselves in 3rd place behind 1st place Real Madrid, Fc Basel. They therefore have to win their next 2 games if they hope of getting to the next round of this year’s edition of the UEFA champions League
