The Yaounde March Against Boko Haram

The May 20 Boulevard in Yaounde like you have never seen it before. Lt. Col. Didier Badjeck, I see you.
This is the march championed by the press, to show support to the troops, and against insurgency.
The build-up to this march generated quite some controversy. Many asking when journalists became activists, or why do a copy-cat march, rather than concrete actions like donating blood, for example.
Regardless, the march garnered a lot of support, as you can see from these pictures. Continue...

Bloggers learning about Good Governance

From Bamenda With Love. Ok, i just couldn't resist that title. Was inspired by a fellow Blogger's Blog, named "From Douala With Love" #ReneJackson.
Let me explain. I'm currently in Bamenda, for an empowering seminar. Indeed it is! 18 bloggers from Yagaoua, to Yaounde, brought together by the Action Foundation AFCIG,
The goal, to get us bloggers develop an interest in good governance specifically (#HonJosephKwi). Overall, empower bloggers to become better, more performant, more accountable, more responsible.
It's a 2 day seminar, and boy!, have I learned. A lot about the dynamics of social media. Courtesy @VictorvanReijsoud and #Chedjou-Kamdem.
-Did you know that Douala is in the Top Ten of Twitter Towns in Africa. Douala twitter users: I hail oh!
-Did you know that LinkedIn is the fav social media for Cameroonians? But come to think of it, it's not so surprising. It's a great site to give visibility to both professionals and job seekers, so of course, almost 1/4 of Cameroon's Internet users are on LinkedIn.
I'm so loving everything I'm learning. And I'm so loving you for taking the time to read this. So, yeah, from Bamenda, with love!
Kudos to @Ngasa Wise Nzikie, he's an amazing trailblazer. Please like his Facebook page #ActionFoundationAFCIG.
A bigger and better me in 2015.

Women's Day: Reflection Period or Time To "Soulever les Kabas"

Another International Women's Day is around the corner.
Another period when wads of cash will be doled out for the purchase and tailoring of the "Women's Day Kaba".
A time which causes friction in some households, because the man of the house has not provided money for the fabric.
A time when some women swap their homes for the beer parlor, and drink to stupor, and proudly "Soulever les Kabas" .
This is what Women's Day in Cameroon has been reduced to!
Granted, there are a few conferences here and there about Equality and Empowerment.
But I'm sorry, these are over-shadowed by the general belief that Women's Day is for women to EAT, DRINK, MAKE MERRY, GET DRUNK.
How bout the real issues. How do we get all these ladies who indulge in the above, to understand that in as much as it isn't forbidden to celebrate, the International Women's Day is a day to reflect on the issues that weigh us down.
How many female Professors does this country boast of?
How many women are on the boards of administrators in corporations?
How many Women are Directors General?
How many women in the villages still suffer from problems linked to land inheritance?
How many women keep suffering from domestic violence and don't know what to do about it?
The list is endless.
It's a daunting task, I know, but you can do something.
I am bringing these questions to the fore on my blog, you can also do something within your sphere.
If any of the decision makers in this country are reading this, please, we need more to be done to raise awareness on the real meaning of Women's Day.

Woman Loses Control Of All Body Fluids While Watching 50 Shades of GreyIn Cinema

This movie is just something else. Hardly a day goes by without a report about someone somewhere reacting one way or the other, to this film. Have neither watched the movie nor read the book, but from the reviews, it seems like a glorified version of soft porn.

Daily mirror reports that a lady at a packed showing of 50 Shades of Grey in Milton Keynes caused the entire audience to be evacuated after losing control of her bodily fluids.
The Cineworld showing had barely got underway when the women, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, started vomiting - much to the horror of those seated near her.
But then things got even worse when she lost control of all her bodily fluids.

Chinese Palm Oil Plantations Are Destroying the Home of Africa's GreatApes

Palm oil plantations have already destroyed huge swaths of orangutan habitat in Indonesia. Now the same thing is happening in Africa, where large-scale industrial plantations threaten chimpanzees, gorillas, and mandrills, among other species.
According to a new report from Greenpeace Africa, rubber and palm oil plantations have grown rapidly in southern Cameroon since the beginning of the decade. The organization collected satellite images that show rapid deforestation in an important area of jungle habitat abutting the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to more than a dozen endangered primate species, as well as elephants, leopards, and the nearly extinct African gray parrot.

“We can see a clear increase of palm oil investments in tropical Africa in the past years,” said Filip Verbelen, a senior forest campaigner for Greenpeace. “Several of the new palm oil projects that are popping up will have—or already have—a negative impact on the tropical rainforest.”

FCFA 5 Billion Economised After Identifying Fake State Employees

The previous exercise saw the names of 13,000 fake State personnel deleted from the payroll.
FCFA 50 billion is the amount reduced from government’s payroll following stringent measures taken after the 2006 headcount of active State workers and retirees to clean up the file of ghost workers. The exercise identified over 13,000 fake State employees, unduly siphoning money into their pockets. The Unit Head for sanitising the State payroll in the Ministry of Finance, Mohamadou Ousman, observed that among those who’s salaries were suspended were those unjustifiably away from active service and category of retirees and others as of right.

Unemployed Man Offered $250,000 By Parents To Leave Home And NeverReturn

My goodness, that's EXTREME. But I'm thinking, for the parents to have taken that decision, they must have been pushed to the wall.
All the same, isn't blood supposed to be thicker than water?

An unemployed young man posting on Reddit claims his parents have offered to give him a quarter of a million dollars - as long as he never contacts them again.
He says he has decided to take the money and asked other users for advice on how to invest it.
The anonymous man explained that he has always had a poor relationship with his parents:

Yaounde's Last Waiting Room: Caring For Terminally ill in Cameroon

The first task for staff at St Martin de Porres hospital’s Pavillon St Raphael unit was to explain the rationale behind palliative care. photographs by Juanjo Pérez
As the sun rises over Yaoundé, the medical round begins in the Pavillon St Raphael unit. Accompanied by a group of nurses, a doctor visits each of the facility’s six rooms. All are at full capacity.
Before the round, the group convenes next to a poster bearing the words of Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of the palliative care movement: “We all matter until the last minute of our lives.” This is the first and only dedicated hospital unit in Cameroon to care for terminally ill patients.
Last April, when the unit opened at St Martin de Porres hospital in the Mvog Betsi neighbourhood of Yaoundé, there were only three or four patients. People didn’t seem to understand why someone would go to a hospital to die.

Have You Had Your Dose Of Exercise?

Just returned from my morning run. OMG...I feeeeeeel so good! It had been ages , well not ages, more like a couple of months, since I did any jogging. This morning, I told myself, "No Excuses", and after morning prayer, I put on my running shoes, and did what I ought to be doing more often.
I love jogging, it's my fav sport, and the city of Yaounde with its hills and valleys is just the perfect place to jog. Ascending the hills gives you the right amount of resistance, descending them gives you time to catch your breath.
If you haven't exercised lately, why don't you try jogging? It's fun, it's exhilarating, and if you're running low on energy like I often am, it'll give you such an energy boost.
Are you on a weight loss journey? Please document it, by way of pictures, and share here. You definitely will inspire others.

Remember Nsam

February 14 1998. Many young people were looking forward to going to watch the 'Kassav' group perform in Yaounde that evening. Others were looking forward to tender moments with their lovers that Valentine's Day.
Early that Saturday morning, exactly like today, two fuel-laden wagons derailed in the Nsam neighbourhood in  Yaounde.
The local population could not resist the temptation of Scooping the free fuel.
Then the worst happened. A fire broke out.
Hundreds of people, burned to death, some charred beyond recognition.
Others were fortunate to be alive, but were left with terrible scars.
As you celebrate love today, spare a moment for the memory of these Cameroonians.

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!!

You never lose by loving. You only lose by holding back.
Happy Valentines Day to you and your loved ones!
