Has your friend just put their new girlfriend or boyfriend into their new profile pic? Psychologists think that says a lot about the strength of their relationship
A new report says that when people put a picture of their significant other into their Facebook photo it can be a sign they're feeling insecure about their relationship.
The report 'Can You Tell That I’m in a Relationship' by scientists from Canada and the US found that when people are worried about their partner’s affections, they tend to make the relationship more publicly visible.
Putting up a new Facebook photo of the two of you cuddling on a beach is certainly one way to do that. As, of course, is going on the front cover of Hello! magazine.
You're also more likely to write about your boyfriend / girlfriend if you're scared the relationship's a bit shaky. Researchers measured daily changes in people’s feelings, then counted how much they posted about their relationship on Facebook. On days when people feel more insecure than usual, they post more about their relationship.
But there's one catch. People who aren't are very affectionate - what's known as avoidant personalities - tend to post much less about their relationships when they worry about their partner. So people who normally seem a bit cold can really clam up when they're anxious.
There have been hundreds of studies into just what Facebook says about us. The BPS journal has done a survey of the most interesting findings.
Shy people use facebook MORE
Contrary to stereotypes that it’s all about bragging and selfies, it’s actually shy people who use Facebook more.
Lonelier women tend to make more personal revelations on Facebook
Lonely people post more private information, such as their real world address - but express fewer opinions.
Extroverted people have more friends
As you might expect, being more outgoing also makes a difference. Extroverts have a higher number of friends on Facebook too.
Heavy Facebookers are also heavy drinkers
Heavy use of Facebook also correlates with heavier use of alcohol AND marijuana.
People with autism REALLY like going on Facebook
Again, it shows Facebook is more than just a tool for showing-off. It looks like social media can actually help people with autism to forge close friendships.
People on Twitter are more interested in understanding the world
People who use Twitter for news are smarter than people who get their news from Facebook. Or at least they are the type of people who will try harder to understand something, a quality called need for cognition.
On the other hand, people on Facebook are more interested in socialising, while Twitter users are massive procrastinators.
You can’t lie on Facebook
Whether you use photo filters or not, you end up revealing your true self anyway.
Connecting with strangers online makes you lonelier
One study found that using the internet to connect with your friends is associated with less loneliness, but using it to connect with strangers (i.e. people only known online) is actually associated with being more lonely.
Looking at your own profile gives you more self-esteem
Looking through your own facebook profile again? Well good. It boosts your self-esteem.

I don't agree with the insecurity part of the relationship. I think for me it boast confidence in me and in the Man I own. Howmuch I love my relationship, family and friends matters to me therefore I put up the pics. Associating Facebook with heavy drinking and drips doesn't di scribe me a bit nor my husband. The have the right to their opinion but it doesn't describe me or my husband an inch.
