Cameroon currently has 442 driving schools. However, an audit conducted by the ministry of transport in November 2014, showed that of this number, only 122 are in conformity with existing rules and regulations governing the sector, which leaves a whopping 80% of them, operating in total illegality. The Minister of Transport, Robert Nkili, has therefore signed a communique, calling on all non-compliant driving schools to regularise their status,on or before February 28, 2014, or be considered clandestine, and be subsequently shut down by administrative authorities.
However, the National Driving School Trade Union, whose Secretary General, Thomas Noubondie, I spoke with, today, says the Ministry of Transport is yet to
publish the list of the Driving Schools which are not in conformity.
He added that the real problems lie in the corruption that plagues the sector, Driving Licence Exam results which are published up to 5 months after the exam is written, etc.
Mr Noubondie said his trade union and some others in the sector, have agreed to not field any candidates for this month's Driving License exam slated for January 31.
A meeting between the Transport Minister and the Driving Schools trade Unions is expected to hold on Tuesday January 13.
Affaire a suivre.
