Insurgency Costs Cameroon 1bn FCFA Losses In Customs Revenue

Customs revenue collected in the far northern region of Cameroon dropped by a little over one billion CFA francs because of the threats posed by the Boko Haram Islamist sect, APA learns Monday on the fringes of the International Customs Day celebrations.
As part of the celebrations, the Customs administration had organized a meeting under the theme: Cameroon Customs faced with the challenges of unsafe borders coordinated management.

"Before, we generated about 5 billion CFA francs per year, in terms of revenue with the bulk of revenue from Fotokol and Kousseri customs posts. As for the fiscal year 2014, we generated 3.9 billion CFA francs, thanks to the excellent performance Fotokol posted in the first half of the year", the Directorate General of Customs (DGG) said.

But these figures dropped from July because of the bombing of the Fotokol post by Boko Haram, the far north customs sector officials said.

Faced with growing insecurity, the customs administration has decided to suspend operations in some custom posts including Fotokol, Kolofata, Dabanga, Limani and Mblamé.

This is no good news for our economy. With the high unemployment rates in the country, I think this will be a plus to high crime wave.
