French police have shot dead a terrorism suspect after he stabbed and seriously wounded two officers in a police station.
The man was killed after he attacked the policemen with a knife in a station in Joue-les-Tours, a suburb of the city of Tours, a spokeswoman for the Indre-et-Loire prefecture in central France said. The French newspaper Le Figaro reports that the man entered the building at around 2pm today yesterday Dec. 20, in an agitated state.
Without warning he then pulled a knife he had hidden behind his back, attacking a police officer while shouting 'Allahu Akbar', or 'God is greatest' in Arabic.
The suspect stabbed several police officers to the face and ear, it is reported, leaving 'no choice but to open fire', according to Nicolas Comte, secretary general of the GSPPolice.
The attack was described as 'brutal' by the Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, who is due to join the Director General of the National Police, Jean-Marc Falcone at a press conference following the fatal incident.
The paper also reports the dead man was a native of Burundi in south east Africa and had a criminal record. He could also be 'an Islamist known by the French DGSI intelligence service for his radical positions', the paper added.
The counter-terrorism section of the Public Prosecutor's office has opened a probe for 'attempted murder and criminal conspiracy in connection with a terrorist organisation', the Paris Prosecutor's office said, without giving further details.
The incident happened in Tours, a small city 150 miles south west of Paris with a population of around 140,000 people.
