The opposition is saying that about 30 people have been killed by riot police who are said to be firing live ammunition and tear gas, while 100 are injured.
Compaore initially declared a state of emergency, but later called it off on state television a few hours after.
He has however refused to step down, stating that he is open to "talks"
It is not clear who is currently in power in the country.
The army announced on Thursday that it had seized power, but a frontline opposition leader Benewende , says this is tantamount to a coup d'état. He says the people will only accept a complete resignation of Blaise Compaore
