New School Year Begins With Heightened Security

The 2015/2016 School Year has kicked off nationwide, with the most remarkable aspect being the presence of law enforcement officers deployed to junctions leading to schools and outside school campuses. Most schools have also taken precautionary security measures which include the use of metal detectors at school gates.

At Government High School Nkoleton, Yaounde, this morning, there was a long queue of students outside the school premises, each student's back pack searched by a uniformed officer, before allowed to enter

There were over a dozen Police and Gendarme officers in the vicinity, some directing traffic, others searching students and anyone who wanted to enter the school.
Anne NGO Nlep, Vice Principal at Government Bilingual High School Nkoleton, says this measure will continue on a daily basis.
The search procedure took over 1 hour 30 minutes to conduct, but students and staff say they are happy with this move, as it reassures them of their safety.
